The Gospel According to St. Matthew
“A Motion Picture which will be seen by the entire world - up to the end of the world!”
Cast
Enrique Irazoqui Margherita Caruso Susanna Pasolini
Credits
Written by:
Pier Paolo Pasolini
Plot
Pier Paolo Pasolini tells the life of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew, using only the text of the Gospel for the dialogue. He casts non-professional actors, including a Spanish student as Christ, and shoots in the poor villages of southern Italy, giving the story an earthy, revolutionary feel. The 1964 film, made by an atheist Marxist, is often regarded as one of the most powerful film versions of Christ's life.
Sinekatalog’s take
Pier Paolo Pasolini's Gospel film uses non-actors and southern Italian landscapes for a raw, powerful Christ. Austere and neorealist, it is among the most moving screen portrayals of the story.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
