Born in Northwood, London, in 1942 and died in 1994, Derek Jarman trained as a painter and designed sets for Ken Russell. His films are visually rich, personal and political, among the most important in British independent cinema. Sebastiane (1976), in Latin, Jubilee (1978), a punk vision of Elizabethan and modern England, and Caravaggio (1986) put gay desire at the centre of film. Diagnosed HIV-positive in 1986, he made his final film, Blue (1993), a blue screen with soundtrack, as he was going blind. He also created a famous garden on the shingle at Dungeness.
