Born in Paraparaumu, New Zealand, in 1964, Andrew Niccol worked in advertising in London before turning to film. He wrote and directed Gattaca (1997), a cool science-fiction story about genetic discrimination, and wrote The Truman Show (1998), which earned him an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. His later films as director, including Lord of War (2005), In Time (2011) and Anon (2018), keep returning to near-future worlds where systems of control squeeze the individual.
