1932'de Kyoto'da doğan, 2013'te ölen Oshima, Japon Yeni Dalgası'nın önde gelen sesiydi. Gençlik, cinsellik, otorite ve Japonya'nın Kore ile ilişkisi üzerine kışkırtıcı, siyasi ve biçimsel açıdan cüretkâr bağımsız filmler yapmak için Shochiku stüdyosundan ayrıldı.
